چکیده

This article considers the blending of atomistic and continuum problems on a bridging subdomain building upon the ideas introduced in [1, 2, 7]. The continuity of the atomistic and continuum solutions is imposed by a constraint operator using Lagrange multipliers. These methods are stated in an abstract form. The consistency of these methods is analyzed. A new blending model is designed using mechanical arguments. The consistency and accuracy of the method is discussed theoretically and confirmed numerically. ∗Computational Mathematics and Algorithms, MS-1320, Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque, NM 87185-1320, ({sibadia,pbboche,rblehou,mlparks}@sandia.gov). †School of Computational Science, Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL 32306-4120, ([email protected])

Blending Methods for Coupling Atomistic and Continuum Models

In this paper we review recent developments in blending methods for atomistic-to-continuum (AtC) coupling in material statics problems. Such methods tie together atomistic and continuum models by using a bridge domain that connects the two models. There are several reasons why AtC coupling methods (of which blending methods are a subset) are important and have been subject to an increased inter...

Connecting Atomistic-to-Continuum Coupling and Domain Decomposition

Many atomistic/continuum coupling algorithms utilize an overlapping subdomain method, where boundary data for local solves in atomistic and discretized continuum subdomains is provided from local solves in neighboring subdomains. Such coupling algorithms are closely related to the classical alternating Schwarz domain decomposition method, although little to no convergence or error analysis exis...

MULTISCALE MODELING OF DAMAGE PROCESSES IN fcc ALUMINUM: FROM ATOMS TO GRAINS

Molecular dynamics (MD) methods are opening new opportunities for simulating the fundamental processes of material behavior at the atomistic level. However, current analysis is limited to small domains and increasing the size of the MD domain quickly presents intractable computational demands. A preferred approach to surmount this computational limitation has been to combine continuum mechanics...

On Atomistic-to-continuum (atc) Coupling by Blending

A mathematical framework for the coupling of atomistic and continuum models by blending them over a subdomain subject to a constraint is developed. Using the framework, four classes of atomistic-to-continuum (AtC) blending methods are established, their consistency is studied, and their relative merits discussed. In addition, the framework helps clarify the origin of ghost forces and formalizes...

Consistent Energy-Based Atomistic/Continuum Coupling for Two-Body Potentials in One and Two Dimensions

This paper addresses the problem of consistent energy-based coupling of atomistic and continuum models of materials, limited to zero-temperature statics of simple crystals. It has been widely recognized that the most practical coupled methods exhibit large errors on the atomistic/continuum interface (which are often attributed to spurious forces called “ghost forces”). There are only few existi...
